Our vision seeks to
transform rural communities, by offering the most recent generation of children the opportunity to become healthy, self- confident, educated young people able to take up leadership roles in their own communities.
Life in the country can be beautiful and idyllic, but for many, it is unrelentingly hard particularly for children and young people. Rural communities in South Africa are often characterised by poverty, domestic violence, sexual abuse, drug /alcohol addiction and hopelessness.
It is OUR belief that no single project can change the face of rural poverty for a child. In OUR experience (The Goedgedacht Trust was founded in 1993), we have found that in order for young people to break out of the cycle of poverty a long term model is needed, offering:
An integrated and holistic programme that provides safe spaces that a child can access from the earliest possible age and continue in until they are ready to enter the working world. Our vision is to see them enter adulthood as educated, healthy, bright eyed and confident young people, equipped with all the tools they require to live fulfilled lives with purpose.
What we believe:
We believe that early intervention with sound investment can lead to massive savings through transformed rural communities contributing socially financially to the country at large.
The Goedgedacht Trust is concerned with ALL the challenges of poverty affecting the lives of rural youth and our philosophy is simply to
- Provide opportunities for development
- Recognise and build on community strengths
- Collaborate with stakeholders in the social sector
Our vision seeks to transform rural communities, by offering the most recent generation of children the opportunity to become healthy, self- confident, educated young people able to take up leadership roles in their own communities. We concentrate on healing the past, building self-esteem, self-confidence, capacity and skills of young people, supporting them in breaking out of the damaging cycle of generational poverty.
In our experience, one good project cannot help people break out of poverty. In the last two decades we have slowly assessed the needs of farm working communities; building on our experience and in conjunction with community members we have constructed a developmental model which is made up of several interlocking programmes that are accessible for all rural youth.
The tapestry of this model is woven with FOUR golden threads which weave their way through the POP Programme:
Care for the Planet
The bottom line is that we do everything we can to intervene as early as possible in the lives of children; protect and nurture them through the first 1000 days of their lives, preparing them for school; and then do EVERYTHING to keep them in school for as long as possible. Throughout this time we help them heal, strengthen their confidence, build coping skills, help them recognise their resilience and reach their individual potential and inspire them to give back to their communities.
Join Our Campaign
The programme is unlike other rural interventions, in that it is long-term. We see this as a marathon, not a sprint, so we aim to provide support for children starting before birth and lasting 20 years, guiding them into adulthood.
